MTB Violin Grade 5 Exam Handbook
MTB Violin Grade 5 Handbook
The MTB Violin Grade 5 Handbook is the official, all-in-one guide for preparing the Grade 5 exam. It brings together performance repertoire, technical work, and musicianship training in a single, structured volume to support confident, efficient preparation.
What's Included
- Repertoire: Six graded recital pieces spanning Baroque, Classical, Romantic and contemporary styles, plus a duet to develop ensemble skills (full list provided in the handbook syllabus).
- Scales & Arpeggios (from memory): Two-octave major/minor scales with specified bowings (separate and slurred), chromatic work where required, and matched arpeggios. Examples include D major, A major, B minor, G melodic/harmonic minor (typically 2 octaves), and a chromatic scale over the practical range; arpeggios to the same keys and ranges.
- Technical Studies: Targeted studies to strengthen shifting accuracy (incl. 2nd/3rd position), string-crossing clarity, controlled détaché and legato, and developing vibrato use where appropriate.
-
Musicianship: Rhythm reading tasks plus one option:
- Listening (aural) skills – sing/identify intervals, patterns, or rhythms; or
- Duet performance – perform the handbook duet with an accompanist/partner.
- Piano accompaniments & recorded backing to support practice and performance readiness.
Exam Structure
| Component | Content & Focus |
| Recital (60 marks) | Perform three graded pieces from the handbook (20 marks each) |
| Technical (25 marks) | Scales, arpeggios, and studies from memory with specified bowings/tempi |
| Musicianship (15 marks) | Reading tasks plus either Listening (aural) tests or Duet performance |
Why This Handbook Works
- Unified Resource: Repertoire, technique, and musicianship in one book.
- Memory & Control: From-memory scales/arpeggios cement intonation, rhythm, and bow discipline.
- Technique that Matters: Studies focus on the core Grade 5 demands—secure shifting, clean string-crossing, tone production, and developing vibrato.
- Musical Growth: Aural and duet options broaden listening skills, balance, and ensemble awareness.
